Prehabilitation Concepts – Oral Care of the Oncology Patient
Course Description: Cancer affects most of us, if not personally then a friend, family member or patient that visits your office. Just as there are many types of cancers, there are also many treatments and those treatments affect the oral cavity. This course covers oral concerns of oncology patients and their caregivers, products to aid in treatment of those oral concerns, the rollercoaster of emotions that can occur, and how the cancer diagnosis affects treatment considerations in your chair. Prehabilitation concepts will help you keep your patient’s mouth healthier during the time of compromised immunity, give ideas for resources you can offer and positively impact a patient’s quality of life.
Course Objectives: After completion of this course attendees will be able to:
- Assist in developing an anticipatory treatment/oral hygiene management plan for the cancer patient’s oral care needs.
- Better understand the limitations and concerns of a cancer patient.
- Evaluate the variety of products available and understand when they are indicated.
- Formulate appropriate patient recommendations and referrals.
